Ute Insurance — NZ
Utes used purely for personal transport are insured like passenger vehicles. Business-use, tradies and farm utes have additional considerations.
Personal-use ute
If your ute is primarily for personal transport (commuting, recreation, occasional towing), it's typically insured under a standard private motor policy — Comprehensive, Third Party Fire & Theft or Third Party.
Business-use / commercial ute
If you use the ute for trade, business or farm work, declare the use to your insurer. Most consumer motor policies exclude or limit business use — you may need a commercial vehicle policy instead. Items to discuss with the insurer:
- Goods-in-transit cover (for tools, materials, stock)
- Tray cover (canopy, lockable cage, security)
- Vehicle modifications (towbar, bullbar, off-road tyres, snorkel)
- Drivers (employees, casual workers)
- Garaging (worksite vs home)
Common mismatches to avoid
- Insuring a tradie ute on a personal policy then claiming for a job-site incident — likely declined
- Failing to disclose modifications — may void cover for related claims
- Underinsuring tools and equipment — many motor policies exclude or sub-limit them
- Assuming any driver is covered — confirm the insured driver list
