No-Claims Bonus Rules — Across NZ Motor Insurers

How no-claims-bonus schedules and protection work at each NZ insurer.

Last refreshed 2026-05-20

What this topic covers

A no-claims bonus is a discount on your premium for each claim-free year. Most NZ insurers offer "NCB protection" — for an additional premium, your bonus survives one at-fault claim. Schedules and ceilings vary; check the wording.

Not on file If the car suffers loss covered by this policy caused by a driver of another vehicle, we will not deduct the excess or adjust your no claims discount, provided you give us: 1. enough information to establish to our satisfaction that the driver of the other vehicle was completely at fault, and 2. the correct registration number of the other vehicle or information we need to positively identify the at-fault driver (including name and address), and 3. reasonable help to recover costs incurred through your claim. Not on file Yes — 'Protected No Claims Bonus' is available as an optional add-on: 'Where You are entitled to a maximum no claims bonus (NCB) You are entitled to make one claim in each Period of Insurance that would normally affect Your maximum NCB without penalty. Any additional claims made in any Period of Insurance that would normally affect the maximum NCB will result in a penalty to the NCB at the Insurance Policy renewal.' NCB is penalised at renewal following an at-fault claim (unless Protected NCB option is selected). No penalty applies where: the insurer accepts the driver was not at fault and name/address/registration of the responsible party is provided; or for windscreen-only claims under the Breakage of Windscreen option; or for Keys and Locks claims.
