Car Insurance Cost — NZ
There's no single average premium that applies to everyone. Insurers price each policy on a combination of vehicle, driver, cover tier, location and excess.
The seven factors NZ insurers price on
- Vehicle make, model and year — replacement cost, parts availability, claim frequency for that model
- Vehicle value and modifications — agreed value vs market value, any non-factory modifications
- Driver age and licence — drivers under 25 typically priced higher; full vs restricted licence
- Claims and driving history — recent claims and infringements feed into the premium
- Cover tier — Comprehensive > Third Party Fire & Theft > Third Party Only
- Excess level — the amount you pay on claim. Higher excess lowers premium
- Garaging address — postcode-level loss data influences pricing
Why "average premium" figures can mislead
Statements like "the average NZ car insurance premium is $X" mix together very different risks — a Comprehensive policy on a new SUV in central Auckland costs far more than a Third Party policy on a 15-year-old hatchback in a small town. We don't publish average premium figures because they aren't a fair signal for any individual driver.
The honest answer is: get personalised quotes across multiple insurers for your specific vehicle, location and cover tier. Two insurers quoting the same risk can differ meaningfully.
