EV Insurance — NZ Considerations

Battery cover, charging cable cover, repair networks for EVs — what to check before binding.

Considerations

Battery is typically the highest-value component on an EV. Most NZ insurers now cover the battery under the standard policy, but some apply specific exclusions (e.g. degradation, manufacturer warranty interaction). Check the wording.

Charging cables and home-charging equipment may be covered under the motor policy, home/contents policy, or neither — clarify with both insurers.

Some insurers have limited EV repair networks (only certain panel beaters are certified for high-voltage repairs). Check whether your insurer's approved repairers cover EVs.

Total-loss valuations for EVs are evolving — agreed value is worth considering, especially for newer or higher-spec models where market value changes quickly.
