Note on legal status
New Zealand does NOT have compulsory motor insurance. Vehicle owners are not legally required to hold third-party or any other motor insurance to drive on public roads. ACC covers personal injury regardless of fault. However, drivers remain personally liable for damage they cause to other people's property — third-party insurance is the standard way to manage that risk.
