Ute Insurance — Personal and Work-Use Considerations — NZ
Utes used for personal transport insure like passenger vehicles. Business / trade / farm use has additional considerations.

Considerations
Utes used purely for personal transport (commuting, recreation, occasional towing) are typically insured under a standard private motor policy.
If you use the ute for trade, business, or farm work, declare the use. Most consumer policies exclude or limit business use — you may need a commercial vehicle policy.
Tray cover (canopy, lockable cage, security), towbar, and non-factory modifications must be declared. Some accessories (bullbars, snorkels, lift kits) materially change the risk and may need a specialist insurer.
Tools and equipment left in the ute aren't typically covered to high values under a consumer motor policy — confirm sub-limits and consider a separate goods-in-transit policy if you carry expensive equipment.
