Car Insurance for Expats and Foreign-Licence Holders — NZ
Considerations for new arrivals, foreign-licence acceptance, no-claims-bonus portability, IDP rules.

Considerations
Most NZ insurers accept full overseas licences from countries that NZTA recognises (which includes most OECD countries). Some insurers want you to convert to an NZ licence within 12 months — confirm the policy condition.
International Driving Permits (IDPs) are accepted by some insurers for short-term visitors. For residents, an NZ licence (or recognised overseas licence) is usually required.
Overseas no-claims bonus is often portable — you typically need a letter from your previous insurer confirming claim-free years. Some NZ insurers accept this in full; others apply a discount.
If you're a new permanent resident, declare your full driving history (including overseas). Hiding it can void cover later.
