Learner Driver Insurance — NZ
Learners and restricted-licence drivers can be covered on most NZ motor policies — but you must declare them, and policy rules around supervision and excess apply.
How learners are typically covered
- Listed driver model — Most insurers require the learner to be added as a listed driver on the policy
- Open-driver model — Some policies cover any driver with the policy-holder's permission, but with restrictions (higher excess for under-25 drivers)
- Supervising-driver requirement — Learner Licence holders must have a supervising driver per NZTA rules; some insurers add policy conditions reflecting this
- Under-25 excess loading — Most insurers apply an additional excess for drivers under 25 (varies by insurer; read the policy wording)
Practical tips
- Always declare a learner/restricted driver to the insurer — undisclosed drivers can void cover
- Check whether the policy has a "restricted-driver excess" — this is in addition to the standard excess
- If the learner is using a specific vehicle (e.g. parent's car) most of the time, list them on that policy rather than a separate policy
- Restricted-licence rules (no passengers under 20 without supervisor, no driving 10pm–5am) are licence conditions — breaching them can affect claims
Specialist providers
Some insurers specialise in younger drivers, modified vehicles, or specific risk profiles. Initio and Star Insure are two examples of specialist motor insurers that handle non-standard driver/vehicle combinations.
